The world got less murderous
Global homicide fell a quarter this century — unevenly, and in one country at a price the aggregate hides completely.
Maternal Mortality: the denominator problem
Global maternal mortality kept falling after 2015 — the apparent stall was COVID. What is real is that progress is being partly masked by where the world's babies are born.
Global Health Priorities
Progress in global health is real but no longer automatic. Child mortality keeps falling — but malaria and measles, two of the cheapest wins in medicine, have stalled and backslid since 2019.
Stories
The denominator problem
Global maternal mortality looks like it stalled after 2015. It didn't — that was COVID. What's really happening is stranger: every income group is improving, and the world average barely moves.
Malaria: the stall nobody expected
For fifteen years the world drove malaria down with a $5 net. Then, around 2019, the cheapest win in global health stopped winning. This is what the data shows.
Episodes
The world got less murderous — and what one country paid for it
Global homicide fell 25% between 2000 and 2024, almost entirely outside the Americas. El Salvador fell 93% in seven years while its incarceration rate reached the highest ever measured — two facts the aggregate hides.
