How much the news talked about “recession,” set against what the economy was actually doing. The gap between the two is the vibecession.
In 2022 the United States talked itself into a recession the data never delivered. This dashboard puts the two side by side: how much US news covered “recession” (from the GDELT Project's global news monitoring) against what the labor market was actually doing (from FRED). Loud coverage, low unemployment — the gap commentators named the *vibecession*.
The deep dive is the Vibecession story. This is Datoid's first dashboard built theme-first off the news-agenda theme bank (Batch 30) — and the first to put news-attention data and macro data on one surface.
The economy underneath
monthlyUnemployment over the same window (FRED). When recession coverage peaked in July 2022, the unemployment rate was 3.5% — a fifty-year low — and it held 3.5–3.7% straight through the coverage spike. No recession was declared in 2022. The line the headlines implied and the line the labor market drew were moving in opposite directions.

Coverage vs reality

Recession coverage climbs to a 2022 peak while unemployment falls to a fifty-year low — the two lines pulling apart *is* the vibecession: a downturn that was discussed into the headlines but never showed up in the labor data. What drove the mood was inflation (near 9% in mid-2022), not joblessness.

The share of US news coverage mentioning recession, daily since 2017 (GDELT). Two peaks dominate: March 2020 at 1.24% — the COVID crash, a real recession — and a second climb through 2022 that topped out at a 1.04% single-day high that summer, nearly as loud. 2022's full-year average (0.26%) was the highest of any year except 2020. Coverage has since fallen back toward 0.05%, near the series low.
