Where the planet's climate stands today, in two indicators. The numbers grew up together — and they're still growing.

Two series, fifty years of monthly readings. Atmospheric CO₂ is up roughly 100 parts per million since 1976 and adds more each decade than the one before it; the global temperature anomaly has moved from slightly below the 1951-1980 baseline to comfortably above it, and the four hottest annual means in our record are 2024, 2026 (year-to-date), 2025, and 2023 — back-to-back.

Atmospheric CO₂ (Mauna Loa)

431 ppm in April 2026, up from 332 ppm when the series begins in 1976 — a 100 ppm rise in fifty years, against ~80 ppm of total change across the preceding ten thousand. The decadal pace is the more revealing number: the 1980s added 16 ppm, the 1990s another 15, the 2000s 20, and the 2010s 24. The first reading above 400 ppm arrived in May 2013; the first *annual mean* above 400 followed in 2015.

Global Temperature Anomaly

+1.18 °C above the 1951-1980 baseline in April 2026. The 1976 annual mean was -0.10 °C; the 2020 mean was +1.01 °C — the first year on record above 1.0 °C arrived in 2016 and the line hasn't returned below it since. The four hottest annual means in our window are 2024 (+1.29), 2026 year-to-date (+1.20), 2025 (+1.19), and 2023 (+1.17): back-to-back-to-back-to-back, and meaningfully clear of the 2010s cluster underneath them.
